Walton in the Community

Walton oversee a wide community offering, which involves partnerships with local schools, as well as disability initiatives, both of which are run by former club Chairman, Graham Mann.

School Partnerships

Since 2015, Walton has been offering softball cricket to local primary schools for both boys and girls as part of our ‘Cricket in the Community’ initiative.

The competition is ever-growing: in 2019, twelve local school teams (Ashley, Bell Farm, Burhill, Claygate, Cleves, Cobham FS, Esher Church, Notre Dame, St Anne’s, Thames Ditton and St James) played a total of 42 matches across four summer afternoons, giving 60 girls and 60 boys the opportunity to play team cricket.

The competition is free for schools to enter and is organised by Walton-on-Thames Cricket Club volunteers.

Plans for 2022

We are now working with local schools to organise this summer’s schedule, which involves cricket on four Mondays across April to July. This year’s dates are now confirmed and invitations to enter have been sent to local schools.

Dates: 25 April; 23 May; 13 June. Finals Day will take place on 4 July,

Disability Initiatives

Disability cricket at Walton began in 2017 when a group of 30 young adults from Elmbridge Community Link (ECL) attended a taster session at the cricket club. Such was the success, a programme of cricket activities every six weeks was put in place throughout the year.

In 2019 we extended our programme to the wider disability community with take-up from several local adult groups, a specialist disability school and a local mainstream school. We will be extending our programme in 2022 and beyond.

We aim to make cricket more accessible to a wide range of children and adults categorised with SEN & D (Special educational needs & disabilities) through the introduction of fun, exciting and rewarding activities.

Plans for 2022

As part of our plan to increase opportunities for more children, we are approaching all local mainstream schools with a SEN&D cohort to arrange a series of free and organised fun activity sessions leading to short format cricket games. These sessions will take place at our home ground, Ashley Park, in June and July 2022.
